Chic in the Cold: My Swedish Winter Survival Guide from Malmö

Make Winter Your Most Fashionable Season
After having lived abroad for 25 years I feel a bit new to the long dark winters of Sweden. Although Malmö so far has been pretty similar to Amsterdam, but with much shorter days. Being from the north I know that Winter in Sweden can feel like living inside a snow globe: beautiful, quiet, and… very dark. But just because the sun barely peeks over the horizon doesn’t mean your style has to hibernate. From layering to finding accessories that make even the chilliest day feel chic, I’ve discovered ways to survive—and actually enjoy—the Swedish winter without sacrificing fashion.
Whether you’re new to life in the north or just looking for tips to stay warm while looking effortlessly stylish, consider this your guide to turning frost and darkness into your most fashionable season yet.

1. Make Your Outerwear the Star of the Show, wether you're in Sweden or somewhere else
In Sweden, winter isn’t just a season—it’s a lifestyle. And if we’re honest, for half the day we’re bundled up, so our coats become our entire outfit. That’s why I refuse to surrender only to the classic black, wind- and rain-proof “wilderness coat” that is of course great to have but should not be our only option. To make winter fashion feel a bit more exciting, and to stay chic and warm in winter, I embrace outerwear that’s colourful, textured, or has an interesting silhouette.
A chunky mohair scarf, a cozy hat, or both can also work wonders—adding your best colours and a touch of personality to even the greyest day. Because your coat shouldn’t just cover you up; it should make a statement. It’s a layer of identity, a boost of style, and sometimes the only thing that keeps you feeling chic when the sun barely rises.

2. Embrace Color and Texture to Stay Chic and Warm in Wintertime
Winter can be dark and uninspiring, but your wardrobe doesn’t have to be. A pop of color in your hat, gloves, or scarf can lift your mood and make your outfit feel fresh. Chunky knits, soft mohair, and layered textures keep you cozy while adding visual interest—because winter doesn’t have to mean monochrome misery.

3. Layering Like a Swede
Layering isn’t just practical—it’s stylish if done right. Start with a warm base layer, then add a sweater, and finish with your statement coat. Different lengths, textures, and fabrics add depth to your outfit. Don’t forget tights, thermal leggings, or long socks—they’re lifesavers when temperatures drop, and they can even peek stylishly from under skirts or boots.

4. Accessories Are Your Best Friend
In winter, small details make a huge difference. Hats, scarves, gloves, and even a statement bag can elevate a simple outfit. Choose pieces that are cozy and visually interesting. A slouchy mohair scarf or a colourful beanie can be a style game-changer on a grey day.

5. Footwear That Works and Wows
Stylish winter boots are possible—you just have to find the right balance of warmth, grip, and style. Sleek leather boots with a bit of insulation can keep your feet warm while looking polished. If snow and slush are unavoidable, consider chic rubber-soled boots or layering your socks for extra comfort.
6. Attitude Is Everything
Finally, winter style isn’t just about clothes—it’s about confidence. When you embrace your look, even the darkest Swedish day feels brighter. Surrendering to the cold doesn’t mean surrendering your style. Own your outfit, love your textures and colors, and walk tall—it’s the ultimate winter accessory.
