The Secret to Falling in Love with Your Wardrobe All Over Again

Having a wardrobe of dreams that manages to meet all our needs may seem like an almost impossible task to achieve. Maybe you are one of many people that keeps adding new items to your closet but still feeling like you have nothing to wear. Or maybe you started wearing the same kind of jeans and jumper uniform everyday because trying to pick something out from your closet is just too much work.

It's funny though how we are sort of expected to be able to build up functional wardrobes all by ourselves. As a Personal Stylist I meet so many women that have very complicated relationships with their closets. Why is it so hard though? Where are we failing?

A lot of times I think our main issue is not having the fundamental base identified. And with the fundamental base I'm referring to colour, shape and style.

If we know which colours suit us the best and how to best dress our body shape and how we want our clothes to look and feel, then we have a solid base to work from.

Because trends come and go and we may hop on some of them but we need to know how we want our clothes to make us look and feel first.  We need to know what our own personal style is to be able to build up a functional wardrobe. And when it comes to personal style we are often a mix of several different styles and it is in that very own mix of styles and elements of styles that our very own and unique personal style takes shape.

If we are strong in our own personal style we will ignore the trends that don't speak to us or that doesn't fit us and we will embrace the ones that do. But, if we don’t know our own personal style we are very likely to be embracing it all or perhaps feeling very lost and not embracing anything at all.

A lot of people feel confused about the trends, and they can feel overwhelming and hard to translate into daily life. But, the important thing is not to copy a trend completely but to rather take the parts that we like and make it ours. If we are not strong in our own personal style though we risk following the trends without making them ours, hence we will end up feeling like we don’t really have a style.

My best advice for achieving a functional wardrobe isn’t only about what to add but first and most importantly of all, what to remove. To be able to build up this wardrobe that works and that inspires us we need to start with the fundamentals and we need to start fresh. First of all we need to know which colours suit us the best. When we do, and when we stay true to our colour season, it becomes really easy because all the colours within our colour season will go beautifully together.

Second important step is knowing how to dress our body shape and to make sure that our closet is filled with items that we can actually wear and that fit us. It is completely useless to fill our wardrobe with clothes that we are hoping to be able to fit into when we for example lose weight.

Lastly we need to sort out what our style is and how we actually want to look and feel. When it comes to style it is very important to be true to ourselves and to recognise how we actually want our clothes to make us look and feel. And even though our core style always stays the same, life changes and we change and we may all of a sudden find ourselves in front of a wardrobe that just doesn't represent who we are anymore.

So, before we even start looking at our wardrobes we need to sort out the basics first. If we only attack the problem by buying more and more clothes we still have the same problem and actually just making it bigger:)

So, the secret to falling in love with your wardrobe all over again is to make sure you first understand your colours, shape and style. You can do this easily by booking a Personal Style Assessment with me, or any other personal stylist by preference of course:) However, this session is a great base to have and will most likely serve like a refreshing and enlightening reset.

Here's to an Autumn full of loving closets:)
